NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Spiras Health announced that healthcare veteran Scott A. Bowers has joined the company as Chief Executive Officer. Bowers will partner with founder Brook Bishop, who will continue as President, to help scale Spiras Health’s proven clinical model for supporting high-risk patients in managing chronic illnesses.

Bowers brings deep experience across both payor and provider organizations, with a strong focus on value-based care and addressing the physical, behavioral, and social drivers that contribute to poor outcomes and high costs. Most recently, he served as President and CEO of Passport Health Plan, a $2 billion statewide Medicaid health plan in Kentucky serving medically complex patients. Prior to that, Bowers was National Medicaid President at Evolent Health, where he helped launch three Medicaid health plans. He has also served on the Spiras Health Board of Directors since 2015.

“My passion has been to improve access to quality care for the most underserved and fragile populations, and I can’t imagine a better place to continue that work than at Spiras Health,” said Bowers. “Brook and his team have created a community-based solution that leverages evidence-based population health strategies to significantly reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations for vulnerable patients. There’s tremendous opportunity to expand Spiras’s reach and impact, and I’m eager to help bring our model to more patients and health plans.”

Bishop founded Spiras Health in 2015 based on the premise that deploying specialists into patients’ homes—supported by technology and aligned with local providers—could dramatically improve outcomes and reduce costs. Before founding Spiras, Bishop co-founded and served as Senior Vice President of Development at BreatheAmerica, a healthcare company that grew from concept to roughly $50 million in annual revenue across nine U.S. markets.

“Spiras is unique because we combine a multi-modal care approach with relationship-based trust,” said Bishop. “When patients experience real improvements in their quality of life, engagement in their care increases. We’re tackling some of the biggest challenges in healthcare, from access to addressing social determinants of health. With our model now refined and expanding into more markets, Scott is the right partner to lead our next phase of growth.”

In 2020, Spiras Health doubled its patient volume and anticipates even greater growth in 2021. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the company maintained uninterrupted care for every patient through a combination of in-person and virtual visits. Hospitalizations and ER utilization among Spiras patients were dramatically reduced, even accounting for pandemic-related disruptions.
